The Mercy University Hospital (MUH) is a city-centre model 3 acute general hospital providing an open 24/7 emergency department, with available 24/7 acute general medicine services, acute surgery, acute paediatrics and critical care.

The MUH is within the South/South West Hospital Group. The group is responsible for the provision of acute hospital care for a population of 895,222 people across the counties Cork, Kerry, Waterford and South Tipperary. The census 2016 showed the current population of Cork city to be 125,622 which is an increase of 5.4% since census 2011. The population of Cork county was 416,574 in the 2016 census which is an increase of 4.2% since Census 2011.

The MUH treats over 137,000 patients per year. The main hospital campus is in Cork city centre, where the emergency department alone has approximately 34,500 attendances per year. As part of the hospital’s acute unscheduled care the MUH run Cork city’s only local injury unit (Mercy – Urgent Care Centre – M-UCC) on St Mary’s Health Campus Gurranabraher where over 18,000 patients have been seen yearly in recent years. Together, the emergency service in the MUH governs the attendances of over 50,000 patients per year in recent years and increasing.

MUH’s catchment area includes some of the most socially disadvantaged urban electoral districts in Ireland. These urban, socially disadvantaged areas have high proportions of marginalised groups compared to national averages: homeless, lone parents, refugees and asylum seekers, people with disabilities, Roma and Traveller communities. Area deprivation and social marginalisation are known determinants of health, both physical and mental. Treatment of this population is unique to MUH and is not the experience of the other hospitals in Cork city.

The MUH has an on-site acute mental health service with 50 in-patient mental health beds. In total the hospital has over 280 beds (both in-patient & daycase beds) providing a general hospital function of both acute unscheduled care (medicine, surgery, paediatrics) as well as a wide range scheduled elective diagnostics (endoscopy, radiology, cardiology) and both daycase & moderately complex elective surgery (vascular surgery, Colo-rectal surgery, upper GI surgery, hepato-biliary surgery, urology).
