Galway University Hospital is urgently seeking a Consultant Doctor in General Internal Medicine with an interest in Infectious Diseases, available to start as soon as possible.
Galway University Hospitals (GUH), consisting of University Hospital Galway (UHG) and Merlin Park University Hospital (MPUH), provide a comprehensive range of healthcare services for emergency and elective patients. Services include inpatient care, outpatient clinics and day care treatments across both hospital sites.
GUH has a leading role in acute healthcare delivery within the region, offering specialist services across a wide variety of disciplines. It is also a designated supra-regional centre for cancer care and cardiac services, serving a catchment population of approximately one million people across the west of Ireland, from Donegal to North Tipperary.
University Hospital Galway is a Model 4 hospital, providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine and critical care. GUH is also recognised for Higher Medical Training in all specialties.
Regional Healthcare Network
The West and North West region provides acute, specialist and community healthcare services to counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and neighbouring areas.
The regional network includes seven hospitals across eight sites:

Position Details
- 12-month locum Consultant contract
- Commencing ASAP
- Potential extension after initial term
- Consultant Physician role in Infectious Diseases and General Medicine
- Irish Medical Council Specialist Registration required
Salary & Benefits
- Approximate net monthly salary: €10,000 to €13,000 after tax and pension deductions (depending on experience)
- Potential to earn additional income through private patients
- 31 working days annual leave plus 10 public holidays
- Up to €12,000 per year for educational funding (Masters, further training, etc.)
- Up to €8,000 annually available for innovation projects

Requirements
- Specialist qualification in General Internal Medicine obtained within the European Union
- Eligible for registration on the Specialist Register of the Irish Medical Council
- Support available for IMC registration if not yet completed
- Please note registration may take approximately 3–4 months, although this can be fast-tracked after receiving a hospital job offer
- Very good written and spoken English
- Strong motivation to relocate to Ireland quickly
- Good experience in Infectious Diseases
- Minimum of 1 year post-CCST experience working as Consultant / Specialist
